In August, the HUED 2024 conference led by Hospitality Hued, marked a significant moment in the hospitality industry, bringing together over eighty attendees in New Orleans for an event dedicated to elevating and celebrating people of color in hospitality. This gathering was not just a meeting of professionals; it was a meaningful convergence of community, support, and inspiration.
A Gathering of Visionaries and Leaders
Hosted by founder Ashli Johnson, M.S., CHT, CGSP, the conference was a powerful gathering that not only fostered insightful dialogue but also supported over thirty Black and Brown-owned businesses.
Jen Collins, Co-Founder & President of Procure Impact, was among the esteemed speakers at HUED 2024. As one of two white speakers, Collins reflected on the profound honor and significance of being part of a conference that focused on racial equity—an issue central to her work since her career pivoted towards social impact in 2018, and central to her life since birth given her Baltimore roots.
Celebrating Social Enterprises and Entrepreneurship
During the event, Collins shared the stage with one of Procure Impact’s marketplace vendors, Dr. Penny Smith-Mickey - founder of Mickey’s Popcorn. Behind her entrepreneurship, Dr. Smith-Mickey is a visionary and unapologetic disruptor whose journey embodies the resilience and innovation that the Hospitality Hued movement aims to champion.
She described the journey of Mickey’s Popcorn as a love story, a sharing that created an atmosphere of openness and vulnerability. Her story not only sheds light about how social enterprises balance purpose and profit, but serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of uplifting voices that have been historically marginalized.
The Power of Representation and Community
In an industry that thrives on connection and collaboration, this event stood out for its commitment to fostering honest conversations that are often left unspoken. One of the most notable aspects of HUED 2024 was the presence of industry leaders who are making waves in hospitality. Among the distinguished guests was Mr. Henry Coaxum, the only Black owner and investor of the Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts New Orleans, whose participation underscored the importance of representation at the highest levels of the industry.
The significance of the event was further elevated by an appearance from Senator Royce Duplessis, who spoke to the rich and vibrant culture of New Orleans and added to the sense of community and commitment to driving change.
Partnerships That Made a Difference
The success of HUED 2024 was made possible not only by the passionate speakers and engaged attendees but also by the support of Summit Partners such as Encore, LEVEL Ultra-Purified Water+, Choice Hotels International, and IHG Hotels & Resorts. These partnerships were instrumental in bringing the conference to life and ensuring that it made a lasting impact.
Jen Collins expressed her deep gratitude to Ashli Johnson and the incredible individuals who contributed to the success of HUED 2024. The conference stands as a testament to the power of community, collaboration, and the unwavering commitment to creating a more equitable future in hospitality and beyond.
